Why CS Duale Just Shook Up Hospital Rules After Shocking KNH Murder
Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale has issued a set of new directives that will overhaul hospital security and patient care procedures across Kenya, following the shocking murder of a patient at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) on July 11, 2025.
Speaking on Monday, July 28, Duale confirmed that he had held a high-level crisis meeting with CEOs of all national referral hospitals to address the alarming lapse in patient safety.
Stricter Rules for Hospital Visitors
Among the urgent reforms announced is a limit on the number of visitors allowed per patient. Going forward, only two visitors per patient will be permitted at national referral hospitals. Mandatory security screening at all hospital entrances will also be enforced immediately.
“Patient safety is non-negotiable. We are putting in place stricter security protocols in all referral hospitals to ensure such a tragedy never happens again,” Duale emphasized.
Countrywide Quality Assurance Program
Duale also unveiled a new national quality assurance initiative that includes regular safety inspections, anonymous patient feedback mechanisms, and stronger complaint escalation channels.
Healthcare workers will undergo continuous training on patients’ rights, hospital ethics, and professional accountability. The program aims to restore trust in Kenya’s public health system while ensuring that both patients and staff operate in a safer environment.
Accountability and Action
The Health CS made it clear that any evidence of negligence uncovered in ongoing investigations or audits would be dealt with firmly. “Where there is failure, we will act decisively. No one will be spared,” he warned.
Support for Abandoned Patients
Duale also addressed the issue of patients who are abandoned in hospitals for extended periods. He announced that the Ministry of Health will work with the Ministry of Interior and community leaders to trace families and ensure these individuals receive proper care or are placed in safe homes.
“We are committed to treating every patient with dignity. Abandonment should never mean neglect,” he added.
The murder at KNH has not only shocked the nation but also reignited debate about safety and accountability in Kenya’s health institutions. With these new reforms, the Ministry hopes to regain public confidence and improve the patient experience in hospitals across the country.
