EACC Nabs Top UoN Officials at Kisumu Airport

University of Nairobi (UoN) Council Chairman Amukowa Anangwe was arrested on Friday, May 16, by Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) officers at Kisumu International Airport. He was swiftly airlifted to Nairobi for questioning.

Also arrested were UoN council members Dr. Ahmed Sheikh Abdullahi, Daniel Brian Ouma, and Carren Kerubo Omwenga. All four are expected to appear in court after being interrogated at the EACC headquarters in Nairobi.

Allegations of Irregular Appointments

The arrests are linked to the controversial appointment of Daniel Ouma as the Acting Chief Operations Officer at UoN. EACC alleges the process was marred by procedural flaws and abuse of office.

Leadership Turmoil Deepens

This development comes amid ongoing leadership disputes at the institution. The Public Service Commission (PSC) recently defended its role in recruiting a new Vice Chancellor and Deputy VCs through a competitive process.

However, controversy erupted when former ICT Principal Secretary Prof. Bitange Ndemo rejected his appointment as UoN VC, claiming it was unprocedural. The council had named Prof. Francis Jackim Mulaa as Acting VC in the interim.

What Next for Kenya’s Top University?

These arrests mark a turning point in the governance crisis that has rocked the University of Nairobi. Stakeholders are now calling for transparency, proper institutional reforms, and a credible process to fill the top leadership roles at the university.
