Ange Postecoglou ‘haters’ to shut up ‘for 24 hours’ after Tottenham beat Frankfurt

Ange Postecoglou picked up a potentially vital result for his Tottenham managerial career during his side’s Europa League clash with Frankfurt.

It has been a dismal season for Spurs under the Australian, with the club enduring a string of poor results and performances that have seen them slide in to the bottom half of the Premier League table.

That has led to calls from a number of Tottenham fans for Postecoglou to be sacked on a number of occasions, such as after his apparent goading of the away end in the defeat at Chelsea.

Indeed, the likes of Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner have been tipped to replace Postecoglou as Spurs boss, with Bournemouth’s Andoni Iraola refusing to speak to Spurs.

However, the 59-year-old has been given some welcome respite that regular-defender Chris Sutton believes will ease the pressure on him, for a brief period at least.

Ange Postecoglou gets more Europa League relief

Despite their struggles domestically, there has at least been some success for Tottenham in Europe this season.

The club could still secure silverware and Champions League qualification for next season while they remain in the Europa League.

They continued their progress in that competition on Thursday night (17 April), with Tottenham beating Frankfurt 1-0 in the second leg of their Europa League quarter final in Germany.

Tottenham last five games Result
Chelsea (A) Lost 1-0
Southampton (H) Won 3-1
Frankfurt (H) Drew 1-1
Wolves (A) Lost 4-2
Frankfurt (A) Won 1-0 (won 2-1 on aggregate)

Dominic Solanke‘s penalty earned a 2-1 aggregate win for Postecoglou’s side, meaning they have now progressed to the semi finals.

Now Sutton has taken aim at those who have been criticising the Australian, claiming they have been shut up by that win, but that it will not take long for them to start taking more shots at him.

Taking to X to react to that win for Tottenham, the former Celtic striker wrote: “Great and deserved result for Big Ange. It will keep the haters quiet for 24 hours…”

Tottenham won’t change managers yet

Football Insider Verdict

It still feels as though Postecoglou‘s long-term position in North London is far from secure, given the fact this has still been a well below-par season for his side.

Delivering some long-awaited silverware and a place in the Champions League for next season though would ease the pressure hugely on the Tottenham boss.

Right now there is still a chance that they could do just that following this victory over Frankfurt, which could also be a big one in terms of ending Solanke’s wait for a goal.

So with Spurs still in contention for what is now their main aim this season, it is hard to imagine they will be sacking Postecoglou any time soon.

Making such a change to upset that rhthym would make little sense, especially with recent suggestions that the Tottenham squad are still playing for Postecoglou.

But, given the attention it generates and the level of sentiment around it that has developed, it will be no surprise to see speculation around the manager’s future emerge again soon as Sutton suggests.

Of course it could also be noted that as Postecoglou was previously successful as Celtic manager, it makes sense that Sutton as a former Celtic player is going to back him.
