Aston Villa were dumped out of the Champions League by Paris Saint-Germain this week and could be hit with a further Uefa blow in the coming weeks and months.
The Guardian has reported (11 April) that Villa are discussions over a financial settlement after breaching squad cost rules for last season – when they played in the Conference League.
Clubs in European competitions were required to keep spending on player wages and fees to 80 per cent of revenue as part of the squad cost ratio (SCR) rules for the 2024 calendar year.
The Midlands giants were fined £52,000 by Uefa last year for late submission of accounts and now face another financial penalty.
Aston Villa’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Villa Park between 2016 and 2018 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – has revealed an update on Unai Emery‘s side receiving a sporting sanction, such as a ban.
Uefa will hit Aston Villa with stark warning, says Wyness
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness insisted any new fine will come with a warning from Uefa – paving the way to a potential sporting sanction.
Villa are fighting to qualify for the Champions League next season – and sit seventh in the table, with only the top five Premier League clubs making the cut.
Position | Team | Played | Points | GD |
1 | Liverpool | 32 | 76 | +43 |
2 | Arsenal | 32 | 63 | +30 |
3 | Newcastle | 32 | 59 | +21 |
4 | Nottingham Forest | 32 | 57 | +13 |
5 | Man City | 32 | 55 | +20 |
6 | Chelsea | 32 | 54 | +17 |
7 | Aston Villa | 32 | 54 | +3 |
Wyness told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “Aston Villa are sailing close to the wind.
“They’ve shown great skill and ability to navigate the PSR situation in the Premier League – but we know Uefa is different.
“They are negotiating another fine, the second one they’ve had – and this one will come with a warning.
“Uefa may say that any future breaches will come with a sporting sanction.
“Whatever amount the fine is, I’m sure Villa will be happy to pay it.”
Aston Villa stance revealed after Man City’s Morgan Rogers swoop
Meanwhile, Football Insider revealed on 9 April Aston Villa are confident of keeping Morgan Rogers this summer despite potential interest from Manchester City.
Man City have been linked with a shock move to bring the 22-year-old back to the Etihad Stadium this summer.
Sources say three-cap England international Rogers is happy at Villa Park after signing a contract running until June 2030 last year.
