What Really Killed MCA Joel Munuve?
The late Kariobangi North MCA Joel Munuve died due to a blood clot in the lungs, also known as pulmonary embolism, a postmortem examination has confirmed.
The autopsy, conducted at Lee Funeral Home and led by Chief Government Pathologist Dr. Johansen Oduor, revealed that a clot had traveled from Munuve’s left leg to his lungs, blocking a major artery and cutting off oxygen supply.
“There is a blood vessel called the pulmonary artery where blood passes from the heart to the lungs. We found a big blood clot tightly adherent to that vessel. This caused the sudden death,” said Dr. Oduor.
Oduor said external signs such as cyanosis—darkened lips and fingernails—indicated oxygen deficiency. The clot originated in the popliteal vein of the lower left leg, which was also found blocked.

Samples were taken for toxicology tests, with the autopsy overseen by a panel of seven pathologists including representatives from the family, Nairobi County Assembly, AAR, and Embakasi East MP Babu Owino.
Lawyer Danstan Omari confirmed the involvement of over 15 other experts from various agencies, including the DCI, government analysts, forensics, and crime scene units.
Kileleshwa MCA Robert Alai noted they briefed the doctors on Munuve’s lifestyle and last known activities before the examination began. The late MCA had reportedly suffered a brief illness before his sudden death.
Joel Munuve was elected as an independent candidate in the 2022 General Elections and served the people of Kariobangi North until his passing.
