KDF Responds to BBC Documentary Alleging Soldiers Shot Protesters at Parliament

The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) has responded to serious allegations made by a BBC documentary, which claims that one of its officers was involved in shooting protesters during the Gen Z-led protests at Parliament on June 25, 2024.

In a statement issued on Saturday, KDF clarified that the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) had not made any formal enquiries, submitted information, or requested investigations into any KDF personnel over the incident.

“IPOA has so far not forwarded any enquiries, information, or requests to investigate any KDF personnel involved in the operations. KDF remains fully committed to upholding the rule of law and continues to operate strictly within the mandate granted by the Constitution,” read the statement in part.

BBC’s ‘Blood Parliament’ Documentary Exposes Shooting Details

The controversial BBC documentary titled “Blood Parliament” delves into the tragic events of June 25, revealing new information about the breach at Parliament and the subsequent shootings of protesters.

Several prominent figures such as activist Hanifa Adan, Boniface Mwangi, Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, LSK President Faith Odhiambo, and student journalist Allans Odemba were featured in the documentary, recounting the chaos and tragedy that unfolded.

Technology Used to Identify Shooters

The BBC employed advanced techniques including camera metadata analysis, livestream timing reviews, and Republic clock footage to identify security officers involved in the shootings.

According to the documentary, protests intensified outside Parliament after news spread that the Finance Bill 2024 had been passed. Protesters David Chege and Erickson Mutisya were fatally shot outside Parliament’s gates.

Activist Hanifa Adan described a chilling moment when a plain-clothes officer shouted “uaa!” (Swahili for “kill”), prompting nearby officers to fire at demonstrators, leading to multiple casualties.

Victims Identified and Circumstances Detailed

David Chege, a 39-year-old software engineer and Sunday school teacher, and Erickson Mutisya, a 25-year-old butcher, tragically lost their lives due to gunshot wounds. Several others were seriously injured, with one protester paralyzed from the waist down.

The BBC documentary revealed footage of police kneeling and firing at protesters. Using 3D reconstruction technology and analyzing over 5,000 images and videos, the investigation identified one shooter as a KDF member based on his uniform, which included a white shoulder patch, matte green helmet, tan boots, and a solid-stock rifle.

Inside Parliament, chaos reigned as protesters tried to flee under heavy gunfire, with MPs and demonstrators caught in the commotion.
