Account Suspended Moments After Post
Human rights activist and Embu Senator aspirant Billy Mwangi’s X (formerly Twitter) account was suspended on Tuesday morning, June 17, shortly after he posted critical remarks about Albert Ojwang’s father. The timing of the suspension has sparked outcry from his supporters and free speech advocates.
Online Backlash Over Praise for Ruto
The controversy began during a funeral planning meeting where Meshack Ojwang, father of the late teacher, thanked President William Ruto for what he described as a “fatherly gesture” following a condolence call and a Ksh2 million donation.
“The President spoke to me like a father to a father. He assured me of support and treated my son as though he were his own,” Mr. Ojwang said.
Some online users, including Mwangi, criticized the statement, suggesting it appeared politically influenced. Others accused leaders of hijacking Albert’s death to advance political narratives.
“It’s true these people were not pained by Albert’s death; they just wanted to use it to advance their political agenda,” wrote user @SteveOgai.
Supporters Demand Reinstatement
Following Mwangi’s suspension, supporters took to X demanding his reinstatement, stating that activists should not be silenced for expressing dissent.
“I’m writing on behalf of Mr. Billy Mwangi to have his account reinstated. He’s sorry for any rules that he might’ve violated,” tweeted @BenardKavuli.
As of Tuesday morning, June 17, Mwangi’s X profile remained inaccessible, with no official statement issued by the platform regarding the suspension.
Previous Activism and Abduction Incident
Billy Mwangi made headlines earlier in the year after he was reportedly abducted by unknown armed men. The incident drew widespread condemnation and led to public demonstrations calling for an end to enforced disappearances and suppression of activists in Kenya.
Ojwang’s Death Sparks National Outcry
Albert Ojwang, a teacher and blogger, died in police custody on June 8 at the Nairobi Central Police Station. He had been arrested over social media posts targeting Deputy Inspector General Eliud Lagat. His death has led to national protests and calls for police accountability, under the trending hashtag #JusticeForAlbert.
In addition to President Ruto’s donation, Azimio leader Raila Odinga contributed Ksh1 million to the family. Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga also pledged to build a new house and connect the Ojwang home to electricity.
