Family Confirms Tragic Update
On Sunday, June 29, the family of Mwangi confirmed that doctors at Kenyatta National Hospital informed them of the grim prognosis. The young man was one of the civilians injured during a demonstration demanding the resignation of Deputy Inspector General Eliud Lagat.
“We want justice for Boniface Mwangi Kariuki. That is the only thing we need,” said Emily Wanjiru, a family spokesperson.
Father’s Emotional Account
His father, Jonah Kariuki Nyambura, said doctors contacted him around midnight on Saturday and explained that while Boniface’s heart was still beating, his brain was no longer functioning.
“We were told by the doctors that his brain has stopped functioning. We have not been told that he is dead, but his heart is still beating,” Jonah explained.
Calls for Justice
The family is now urging the government and relevant authorities to expedite investigations and ensure justice is served for Boniface, who became a symbol of police brutality during recent protests.
The protests on June 17 were part of a growing national movement seeking accountability in Kenya’s law enforcement following high-profile cases of excessive force.
