Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) has confirmed that Boniface Kariuki, the hawker who was shot during protests in Nairobi, underwent a successful emergency surgery and is currently in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) under close medical supervision.
Surgeons Remove Bullet from Victim’s Skull
Speaking to the media on Wednesday, June 18, KNH CEO William Sigilai stated that the victim’s condition had improved since admission. However, he remains unconscious and in critical care.
“The CT scan confirmed the presence of a bullet on the left side of his head. A multidisciplinary team led by our neurosurgeon conducted a two-hour operation to remove the object,” said Sigilai.
Sigilai revealed that the bullet had caused brain damage, but emphasized that the patient was stable post-surgery and receiving round-the-clock ICU monitoring.
Rubber Bullet Likely Used, KNH Says
Initial medical assessments suggest Kariuki was hit by a rubber bullet, a finding that aligns with police reports and viral video footage from the incident.
“While his condition remains critical, he is alive and being closely monitored,” Sigilai added.
Identity Yet to Be Fully Verified
KNH noted that the patient’s full identity had not been officially confirmed. Hospital policy requires verification in collaboration with the family, who are currently assisting in the identification process.
Hospital Receives 16 Patients After Protests
KNH further disclosed that 16 people injured during the Tuesday protests were treated at the hospital. The injuries included gunshot wounds, blunt force trauma, and skull fractures.
“Of the 16, seven were admitted, nine were treated and discharged, two have undergone surgery, and four more are scheduled for surgery today,” read part of the hospital’s update.
One of the patients remains unidentified and is believed to have sustained a skull fracture during an assault.
Public Reaction and Legal Progress
The shooting of Boniface Kariuki sparked national outrage, with KNCHR and rights groups condemning the police response. Two officers linked to the incident have since been arrested and are awaiting arraignment.
