CA Issues Stern Directive to Media Houses
The Communication Authority of Kenya (CA) has officially directed all television and radio stations to stop the live coverage of the ongoing demonstrations taking place across the country on Wednesday, June 25, 2025.
The directive was made public via a letter shared by Citizen TV’s Editorial Director, Linus Kaikai. The CA letter, addressed to broadcast media houses, cited multiple constitutional and legal violations as the basis for its order.
Violation of Broadcast Laws Cited
According to the CA, the live airing of the Gen Z-led protests contravenes several legal provisions.
“The live coverage of the June 25th, 2025, demonstrations is contrary to Articles 33(2) and 34(1) of the Constitution of Kenya and Section 461 of the Kenya Information and Communications Act, 1998,” the CA stated.
The Authority warned that any failure to comply with the directive would attract regulatory action as provided under the Communications Act.
Warning to Media Outlets
“This is therefore to direct all television and radio stations to stop any live coverage of the demonstrations forthwith. Failure to abide by this directive will result in regulatory action,” the letter emphasized.
Growing Concern Over Media Freedom
The CA’s move has already sparked online reactions, with many Kenyans accusing the government of infringing on freedom of the press and the public’s right to information.
This directive comes amid heightened tensions nationwide, as protests continue to gain momentum over issues such as governance, youth unemployment, and police brutality.
