Homa Bay has been thrown into turmoil as angry protesters stormed Mawego Police Station and set it ablaze on Thursday, July 3, while carrying the body of slain blogger and teacher Albert Ojwang.

The emotional scenes saw thousands of residents, including women and children, escorting Ojwang’s coffin through dusty village roads to the station, chanting slogans demanding justice for their fallen son.

“No Justice, No Peace!” the crowd roared, accusing police of playing a direct role in Ojwang’s mysterious death.

What Sparked the Rage?

Ojwang, 29, was reportedly arrested by officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI Kenya) over allegations of publishing false information online. He was first detained at Mawego Police Station before being transferred to Central Police Station in Nairobi.

Tragically, he never made it back home alive.

Murder Charges Against Police Officers

The outrage has now led to a major legal showdown. Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Renson Ingonga has approved murder charges against Central Police Station OCS Samson Talaam and five other officers suspected to have been involved in Ojwang’s death.

The six officers are expected in court later this week as the case draws nationwide attention.

“Our Son Was Silenced” – Family Speaks Out

Ojwang’s family has spoken out, calling the 29-year-old teacher and blogger “a bright light” who was taken too soon. His mother, overcome with grief, told The Star: “He was our hope, and now they have killed him like an animal.”

Meanwhile, rights groups are demanding accountability, terming Ojwang’s death as yet another statistic in Kenya’s growing list of extrajudicial killings.
