Activists Demand Full Disclosure on Kariuki’s Condition

Kenyan activist Hanifa Farsafi has called for clarity from Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) regarding the current state of Boniface Kariuki, the hawker who was shot during anti-government protests on June 17.

“I sincerely hope KNH is not concealing the real situation of Boniface Kariuki,” Farsafi posted on X, before later deleting the message.

Alarming Health Updates Leak Online

According to an anonymous message shared by the activist, Kariuki underwent a second surgery but remains in critical condition. The text alleged that:
“The bullet is lodged in his head and can’t be removed. He was in surgery again yesterday. He is still alive, just not doing well.”

The note also claimed that seven surgeons attended to Kariuki but expressed minimal hope of recovery due to suspected brain damage. If he survives, it is feared that he may be left in a persistent vegetative state.

KNH CEO Updates Nation on Kariuki’s Status

Dr. William Sigilai, Acting CEO of KNH, provided an official update on June 18. He noted that Kariuki had sustained a critical gunshot wound to the left side of the head, resulting in extensive brain trauma and bleeding.

“Upon arrival, he was critically ill. A complex surgery was conducted to remove the projectile suspected to be a rubber bullet but we await forensic confirmation,” said Dr. Sigilai.

Kariuki was then placed on life support in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) as he remained unconscious.

Omtatah: Boniface Kariuki Is Alive

Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah visited KNH on Saturday morning to verify Kariuki’s status after rumours of his death spread online.

“I woke up early and came to KNH to confirm that the boy is not dead. A doctor assured me that he is still alive,” Omtatah said.

He also noted that multiple other victims from the protests are currently receiving medical care at KNH.

Public Demands Transparency from Authorities

As the country reels from the aftermath of the June 17 protests and the shooting incident involving Constables Masinde Barasa and Duncan Kiprono, Kenyans are demanding transparency and justice for Boniface Kariuki and his family.
