Murkomen Issues Shoot-To-Kill Order Amidst Rising Tensions

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen sparked outrage on Thursday, June 26, after publicly directing police officers to shoot anyone attempting to storm police stations.
The remarks were made while he was assessing damages at the Dagoretti Police Post following the June 25 demonstrations.

“We have told the police to shoot anyone who comes near a police station,” Murkomen declared during his address to the residents.

Residents React with Heckles and Chants

The CS’s remarks were not well-received. Locals at the scene heckled and jeered, some chanting the word “wantam”  a slogan popularly used by opposition leaders in their criticism of President William Ruto’s administration.

Despite the negative reaction, Murkomen defended his order, asserting that any attempt to steal police weapons should be treated as a national security threat.
“Someone trying to snatch a gun from a police officer… you think that person will just be arrested? No way,” he said.

Stolen Firearms During Protests

Murkomen revealed that five guns were stolen from Dagoretti Police Post and four were destroyed in Gachui Police Post during the protests. He described the actions of the demonstrators as criminal, stating:
“The criminals were after guns in the armouries and police uniforms. They hid behind the pretense of peaceful protest.”

He further stated that law enforcement agencies are pursuing those responsible for the looting and violence.

Murkomen Calls June 25 Protests an Attempted Coup

The Interior CS characterized the June 25 demonstrations as an attempted coup, claiming that certain politicians were behind the hiring of goons to disrupt public order.
His comments come amid growing tensions across the country following Gen Z-led protests over government accountability and rising living costs.
