What Sparked the Confusion?
On May 28, 2025, social media platforms exploded with claims that Joseph Irungu, alias Jowie, had been released from prison. The rumors stemmed from a gazette notice dated May 23 listing 57 pardoned prisoners, including a man named Joseph Irungu Maina.
Adding to the speculation, some media outlets incorrectly reported that Jowie, convicted for the murder of Monicah Kimani, was among those granted presidential clemency.
Official Clarification: Not the Same Joseph Irungu
To clarify the situation, Dennis Itumbi, Head of Creative Economy and Special Projects in the Executive Office of the President, publicly debunked the rumors. He confirmed that the Jowie Irungu in question—full name Joseph Irungu Kuria—was not included in the list.
The Joseph Irungu listed as inmate number 22 was convicted in 2015, while Jowie’s conviction was delivered in March 2024. These details confirm that the released prisoner is a different individual entirely.
Jowie Irungu’s Sentence Still Stands
Jowie Irungu was sentenced to death on March 13, 2024, for the brutal murder of businesswoman Monicah Kimani. The High Court ruling cited overwhelming evidence, including his illegal possession of a firearm and the calculated execution of the crime.
Understanding the Power of Mercy Act
The Power of Mercy Act allows the President of Kenya to grant mercy to convicted individuals. However, this structured process involves thorough vetting and public interest considerations. There is currently no evidence that Jowie Irungu has been considered for such a pardon.
Public Reactions and Lessons Learned
The viral nature of the false report underscores the importance of verifying sources before sharing news. The mix-up over names triggered unnecessary public outrage and misinformation.
