In a statement issued on Monday, June 16, 2025, Lagat stated that his decision was made in good faith to ensure transparency and impartiality during ongoing investigations.
“In view of the ongoing probe into the death of Mr. Albert Ojwang and my responsibilities as DIG, I have opted to step aside pending completion of investigations,” Lagat said.

Background to the Controversy
Ojwang, a vocal blogger known by the alias Pixel Pioneer on X (formerly Twitter), was arrested on June 7 after a complaint filed by Lagat over alleged defamatory posts.
The posts accused Lagat of corruption and abuse of power — claims later dismissed by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC). Ojwang was moved from Homa Bay to Nairobi Central Police Station, where he reportedly died in custody under mysterious circumstances.
Mounting Public Pressure
Leaders including former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, Senator Boni Khalwale, and Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot had all called for Lagat to either resign or step aside.
“Suspending junior officers is not enough. Eliud Lagat must be held accountable. He should face the law like any other Kenyan,” said Khalwale during a press briefing.
Calls for Justice and Transparency
Ojwang’s death has sparked a national outcry, with Kenyans demanding justice for police brutality victims and accountability at the highest levels of the National Police Service.
Lagat has pledged to fully cooperate with the investigation and offered his condolences to the Ojwang family, saying he is ready to support the probe in any way required.
What Next for the Investigation?
While Lagat’s deputy takes over the role in an acting capacity, pressure continues to mount on other high-ranking officials, including Inspector General Douglas Kanja and DCI Chief Mohamed Amin, to clarify their roles in Ojwang’s transfer and eventual death.
As protests continue across major towns under the hashtag #JusticeForOjwang, all eyes remain on the government and Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) to deliver answers and justice.
