At least eight people have died and more than 20 others injured following a devastating fire that tore through the Makina area of Kibera slums in Nairobi early Saturday morning.

According to Kilimani police commander Patricia Yegon, the fire began around 5 a.m. as most residents were still asleep. Tragically, seven members of one family and a pregnant woman were among the deceased.

“Eight people died while seven others are in hospital with serious burns. We are investigating the cause of the fire,” said Yegon.

Emergency Teams Respond Swiftly

The Nairobi City County Fire Brigade, with assistance from community members, managed to contain the blaze which affected around 40 households. The Kenya Red Cross confirmed their presence at the scene, offering emergency aid.

Among the injured are several children, women, and a man, most of whom are currently being treated at Kenyatta National Hospital. Seven of the victims are reported to be in critical condition.

Local Leaders Assure Support

Kibra MP Peter Orero visited the scene and extended his condolences, assuring residents of immediate relief and long-term support.

“This is a heartbreaking moment for all of us in Kibra. We mourn with the families who have lost their loved ones and are committed to supporting them through this difficult time,” Orero said in a statement.

Call for Long-Term Safety Measures

Orero emphasized the need for sustainable interventions to prevent similar incidents. “We are working with relevant authorities to investigate the cause and implement long-term safety measures,” he added.

This tragedy follows another deadly fire in Nairobi’s Mathare B slums earlier in the week, which claimed five lives and displaced dozens more.

Many of the displaced residents from Kibera are now sheltering at nearby schools and churches as aid agencies and emergency teams continue to assist with food, medical care, and counselling.
