Five Gang Members Arrested Over Killing of Police Officer in Nakuru

Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have arrested five gang members suspected of being behind the gruesome killing of a police officer and the wounding of two others during a patrol in Nakuru’s Free Area.

Crackdown on Notorious Gang

According to a statement by DCI Kenya on Monday, June 2, 2025, the arrests were made during a targeted operation led by the Operation Action Team, Crime Research Bureau, and officers from the Nakuru DCI team.

The suspects – William Nywhili Rioba, Nyahili Nyamuhaga Magige, Emmanuel Muita Muita, Catherine Nkatha Zakayo, and Peter Chacha – were flushed from their hideouts and taken into custody ahead of their arraignment on Tuesday, June 3, 2025.

Deadly Attack on Police and Businessman

The suspects are linked to the murder of a 24-year-old businessman during a violent robbery in the Soilo area of Nakuru. Armed with machetes and daggers, the gang reportedly stole hundreds of thousands of shillings before dragging the victim outside and fatally shooting him.

The same gang is accused of ambushing three police officers on patrol at around 1:29 a.m. on June 1, killing one and leaving two with gunshot wounds. The injured officers are currently receiving treatment at Nakuru Level Five Hospital.

Weapons Recovered

During the operation, detectives recovered an AK-47 rifle (serial number 18916) loaded with three rounds of ammunition. The weapon had been concealed in dry grass, believed to have been used during the attacks.

DCI Reassures Public

The DCI emphasized its commitment to public safety, confirming that anti-robbery teams have been dispatched to neutralize other armed gangs operating in the region. “Our priority remains the security of Nakuru residents and all Kenyans,” the agency stated.

What Next?

The five suspects will appear in court on June 3, 2025, as investigations continue to determine the full extent of their criminal activities. Meanwhile, the DCI continues its crackdown to rid the streets of armed gangs and restore peace in Nakuru County.
