Fred Matiang’i Returns to Kenya from US as 2027 Presidential Bid Heats Up
Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has made a surprise return to Kenya from the United States, where he has been serving in a consultancy role with the World Bank.
Matiang’i landed at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) on the night of Thursday, April 17, to a warm reception by political leaders including Jubilee Party Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni, Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka, Nyamira Governor Amos Nyaribo, and UDA Nominated Senator Gloria Orwoba.
Backed by Jubilee Party for 2027 Presidency
His return follows recent political developments where the Jubilee Party publicly endorsed Matiang’i as its flagbearer in the upcoming 2027 general elections.
During a meeting held in Narok County on January 25, Jeremiah Kioni confirmed that the Uhuru Kenyatta-affiliated party has identified Matiang’i as their choice to unseat President William Ruto.
“Fred Matiang’i is the one they are saying is in Jubilee. He worked with the party for 10 years. So, we as the Jubilee Party have our own candidate, Fred Matiang’i. He will face off with other candidates to ensure President William Ruto goes home,” said Kioni.
Push for Minority Representation
Kioni also emphasized the party’s desire to back a leader from a minority community, signaling a strategic move to rally support from marginalized groups across the country.
“Let us be united and cast our vote in one basket. The other time we voted for Ruto and others voted for Raila Odinga. Even this round, we will also vote in a candidate from a minority community,” he added.
Gachagua Signals Possible Alliance
In a new twist, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua hinted at working with Matiang’i and other opposition leaders to form a unified political front.
Speaking on Tuesday, April 15, Gachagua revealed ongoing talks involving Kalonzo Musyoka, Eugene Wamalwa, George Natembeya, and Fred Matiang’i to craft a new political alliance.
“We have listened to Kenyans who have said we come together and form a government that would take the country forward. I’m doing that with Kalonzo Musyoka, Eugene Wamalwa, George Natembeya, and Fred Matiang’i,” said Gachagua.
With Matiang’i back in the country and mounting political support behind him, Kenya’s 2027 presidential race is already shaping up to be a heated contest.
