Nairobi County Chief Officer for Environment Geoffrey Mosiria has issued a stern warning to renowned televangelist Pastor James Ng’ang’a over unpaid land rates amounting to Ksh10 million.

County Demands Payment or Faces Action
Speaking on Monday outside the Neno Evangelism Centre in Nairobi, Mosiria gave the church until Wednesday, May 21, to clear the outstanding land rate debt or face enforcement measures, including closure of facilities operating without licenses.
“This ten-million debt must be cleared. The county collects your garbage, maintains your area, and offers services all of which require funding,” said Mosiria.
Restaurant Under Scrutiny
In addition to the land rate debt, county officials demanded that Pastor Ng’ang’a produce a valid business permit and food handler’s certificate for a restaurant operating within the church premises.
“By Wednesday, I want those documents displayed at your facility. If not, someone will be arrested, and this place shut down,” an accompanying official warned.

Ng’ang’a Claims Previous Waiver
Pastor Ng’ang’a, in response to the renewed demands, claimed that former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko had granted waivers to churches regarding land rates.
“You cannot demand payment until you officially revoke the waiver. I’m not against paying, but be fair. Ten million is nothing to me — even five million is small; I could give up my car for that,” Ng’ang’a declared during a past sermon.
Crackdown on Revenue Defaulters
This move is part of a broader campaign by Nairobi County to recover millions in unpaid land rates and enforce compliance across both religious and commercial institutions. Officials have intensified visits to defaulting properties, a move met with both support and criticism.
Earlier this month, Mosiria made headlines for cracking down on an ice cream vendor accused of selling drug-laced treats to schoolchildren in Kilimani.
What’s Next for Neno Evangelism?
All eyes are now on the Neno Evangelism Centre, as Wednesday’s deadline looms. If Pastor Ng’ang’a fails to comply, Nairobi County may take immediate enforcement action.
