Gov’t Makes Key Changes After Security Chaos at Kasarani and Nyayo Stadiums

Kenya News — Interior Ministry has stepped in to fix crowd control issues after chaotic scenes were witnessed at Kasarani and Nyayo Stadium during Sunday’s football matches.

What Went Wrong on Sunday

On Sunday, football fans experienced long delays and congestion at entry points due to the late arrival of security personnel. This led to crowd build-ups and complaints from spectators.

Speaking on Thursday, August 7, Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omolloh admitted that the failure to deploy officers in time was the main cause of the chaos.

“Just like the chair said, we had a late deployment on Sunday. We have now corrected that,” PS Omolloh said.

New Crowd Management Measures Introduced

Omolloh revealed that changes had already been implemented to prevent similar scenes from happening again. Security officers and stewards will now be deployed much earlier before kickoff.

“Because we have deployed in good time, people will be cleared as soon as they come, so there is no room for that congestion,” he added.

The Ministry has also ensured that barriers are correctly placed to guide fans to the right gates. This is aimed at improving flow and reducing unnecessary crowding.

Organizers Promise Smooth Experience

The CHAN 2025 Local Organizing Committee (LOC) Chair Nicholas Musonye confirmed that the delayed deployment of stewards and volunteers caused the Sunday disruptions.

To avoid a repeat, gates will now open several hours before kickoff. For Thursday’s 7 PM match, gates opened as early as 1 PM.

“We are giving people time to come in without causing congestion. Come early, enjoy yourself, get your ticket,” Musonye said.

Fans to Enjoy Better Facilities

Fans will also enjoy improved amenities inside the stadiums. According to organizers, more snacks, refreshments, and seating arrangements have been provided to make matchday experiences smoother and more comfortable.

“Everything is okay now. Deployment has been done. There’s no hitch,” Musonye assured fans.

Why It Matters

These changes come as Kenya prepares to co-host the CHAN 2025 tournament. Ensuring proper security and crowd control will be key to the success of the international event and restoring confidence in the management of large public gatherings.
