Former Deputy President Pays Tribute to Courageous Cleric

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has broken his silence following the tragic and suspicious death of Fr. John Maina Ndegwa, a Catholic priest from Nyandarua County who passed away shortly after hosting him during a church celebration.

In a heartfelt statement issued on Wednesday, Gachagua remembered Fr. Maina as a fearless spiritual leader who was never afraid to speak out. “He was a man of truth, a shepherd of the Lord who stood for justice without fear or favour,” he said.

Fr. Maina’s Final Sermon Left a Mark

Gachagua revealed that he had shared a moment with the priest during his silver jubilee celebration two weeks prior to his death. During the ceremony, Fr. Maina delivered what has now been described as a “powerful and fearless sermon” addressing the state of the nation.

Calls for Justice as Questions Linger

Following news of the priest’s death, Gachagua called upon law enforcement to act swiftly and ensure justice is served. “I urge the security agencies to leave no stone unturned in uncovering the truth and bringing those responsible to justice,” he stated.

He also extended condolences to the Catholic Diocese of Nyahururu and the faithful of Igwamiti Parish, where Fr. Maina served as parish priest.

DCI Reveals Grim Details of Priest’s Final Hours

According to a statement by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), Fr. Maina was last seen on April 27, 2025, during the event attended by Gachagua and other leaders. On May 15, he was discovered by a boda boda rider on the Nakuru-Nairobi highway, bruised and bleeding.

The priest reportedly told the rider that he had been abducted in Nyahururu. He was rushed to St. Joseph’s Mission Hospital in Gilgil where, despite emergency efforts, he died shortly after admission.

Autopsy and Investigations Underway

The priest’s body was later moved to the Nyahururu Sub-County mortuary for preservation and post-mortem examination. The DCI has since launched a full investigation to determine the motive and identity of the assailants.

Public Reaction and National Concern

The incident has sparked public outcry, with many Kenyans questioning the safety of outspoken religious leaders. Social media platforms have been flooded with tributes to Fr. Maina, many calling for a transparent investigation into his death.

Fr. John Maina’s passing leaves behind not only a grieving community but also a haunting mystery. As the nation waits for answers, his legacy of boldness and truth-telling continues to inspire faith and calls for justice.
