How KUCCPS Calculates Cluster Points and Cut-Offs for Courses

The Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) is the body responsible for determining how students are placed into certificate, diploma, and degree programs. This article breaks down how KUCCPS sets cut-off points, cluster points, and determines student eligibility.

What Are Subject Clusters?

A subject cluster refers to a set of four Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) subjects that are required for a specific program. For instance, for a health science degree, the required cluster subjects include Biology, Chemistry, Physics or Mathematics, and English or Kiswahili.

Grouping of Programs

All programs with the same subject cluster requirements are grouped into one cluster. KUCCPS publishes this list on the Students’ Portal under the Downloads section.

How Cluster Weights Are Calculated

Cluster weights are a student’s computed performance in the four required subjects compared to the best-performing students in the same KCSE year. The weight is calculated to three decimal places to reduce ties and improve ranking accuracy.

Students are advised not to compute their own cluster points, as KUCCPS uses performance data and indices from the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) to compute them accurately.

Why Students Can’t Calculate Their Own Cluster Points

The system uses internal performance indices (PI) from KNEC, which are not publicly shared. This makes it impossible for students to manually calculate accurate cluster points. KUCCPS automatically computes and displays the correct weighted cluster points on each student’s portal.

How KUCCPS Determines Cut-Off Points

Cut-off points represent the weighted cluster points of the last student placed in a course based on merit. Students are ranked from highest to lowest cluster weight, and admission slots are filled in that order. The last student’s score becomes the official cut-off point.

This process is fully automated and only finalized after all student applications and KCSE performance data have been analyzed. As KUCCPS CEO Alice Wahome stated:

“Once the learners have been ranked, the last student who is ranked in that programme forms what people know as the cut-off point.”

Minimum Requirements for Admission Levels

  • Artisan (Level 4): KCSE mean grade of E
  • Craft Certificate (Level 5): KCSE mean grade of D and above
  • Diploma (Level 6): KCSE mean grade of C– and above
  • Degree Programs: KCSE mean grade of C+ and above

Some degree programs may have additional subject-specific requirements, which are provided during the application period on the KUCCPS portal.

Why Understanding KUCCPS Placement Matters

Being aware of how KUCCPS sets cluster and cut-off points helps students make informed course selections. Knowing your weighted cluster points and checking the previous year’s cut-offs can improve your chances of successful placement.
