Raila Laments Missed Economic Opportunity

ODM Party Leader Raila Odinga has voiced his dismay following the cancellation of a proposed partnership between Kenya and India’s Adani Group involving the expansion of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).

Speaking during the 3rd National Executive Retreat in Karen on Friday, June 20, Raila said the project could have elevated Kenya’s position as a regional aviation hub.

“Kenya is very strategically located. I was very disappointed when we were not able to move on with the airport contract. When they brought in Adani, they brought all these politics, and the contract was cancelled. If that is not done, Nairobi will become dormant,” Raila stated.

Why the Adani Deal Was Cancelled

On November 21, 2024, President William Ruto directed the Ministry of Transport and Ministry of Energy to cancel the Adani-JKIA and Adani-Ketraco Public-Private Partnership (PPP) agreements.

The decision followed allegations of bribery involving Indian billionaire Gautam Adani, with US prosecutors reportedly filing charges.

“I have stated in the past, and I reiterate today, that in the face of undisputed evidence or credible information on corruption, I will not hesitate to take decisive action,” Ruto told Parliament.

Raila Defends Adani’s Track Record

Before the cancellation, Raila had defended the Adani Group, describing it as a credible partner with a proven track record in infrastructure development.

“Adani is a credible partner. They have proven their capabilities in projects that surpass what we have seen in East Africa,” Raila said during an earlier event in Mombasa.

He revealed that he first engaged with the group in 2010 while serving as Prime Minister, noting that their interest in investing in Kenya was hindered by the lack of a proper legal framework for PPPs at the time.

Calls for Balanced Accountability

Raila warned that political interference could jeopardize Kenya’s global investment appeal. He emphasized the importance of transparency, but cautioned against blanket condemnation of reputable firms.

“Let there be transparency, but do not condemn innocent companies that are engaged in legitimate commercial transactions. If there are individuals who have made mistakes, let them own up and admit it,” he concluded.
