Rangers hiring Gennaro Gattuso as their new manager would come as a surprise given his track record at various clubs, sources have told Football Insider.

The Gers’ incoming owners 49ers Enterprises are keeping their powder dry until the summer with a new managerial appointment at Rangers set to wait until season’s end, but Gattuso is one big name linked.

Gattuso would be a popular choice for fans having starred for the Gers in 1997–98 under Walter Smith, but sources have told Football Insider that the Italian would now be far from an ideal fit for Rangers.

The 47-year-old, currently in charge of Hajduk Split, may be associated with a period of success at Ibrox, but his “very chequered” managerial career to date is seen as a warning sign for Rangers’ higher-ups.

Rangers urged to run a mile from Gennaro Gattuso hire

There’s little doubt that Gattuso was a top player in his spells at Rangers and more notably AC Milan, but that hasn’t translated to success in the managerial dugout, with nine jobs in just a 12-year career so far.

Gattuso’s first job with Swiss side FC Sion last three months, as did his next sell at Palermo, and he also left OFI in Greece after six months due to financial problems; eventually landing at Hajduk Split last June.

The Italian is under contract in Croatia until 2026 and has had lengthier spells in charge of Pisa, Milan and Napoli, but the 49ers turning to Gattuso as the man to take Rangers forward would be a big surprise.

49ers Enterprises play waiting game for new Rangers manager

Football Insider revealed on 12 April that 49ers Enterprises want to bring in Arsenal director Jason Ayto in an ambitious move, and his influence could prove crucial in deciding their first managerial hire.

Sources told Football Insider last month that interim boss Barry Ferguson is in contention to take the job permanently at the end of the season, but he may have to win the Europa League to stand any chance.

Brining back a former Gers legend who had a world-class playing career in midfield could see the 49ers appoint Steven Gerrard in the Ibrox dugout this summer, but despite the 2021 Premiership title winner dismissing talk of a swift return to management, the 44-year-old is a much likelier hire than Gattuso.
