In a significant move aimed at strengthening governance and aligning ministerial leadership with national priorities, the President of Kenya on March 26, 2025, announced new nominations and key cabinet portfolio reassignments. This decision, communicated through an official press release from the Executive Office of the President, demonstrates the administration’s continued efforts to enhance efficiency and performance across ministries.

New Cabinet Nominations

In accordance with Article 152(2) of the Constitution, two distinguished individuals were nominated for appointment as Cabinet Secretaries:

  • Ms. Hanna Wendot Cheptumo – Nominated to head the Ministry of Gender, Culture, The Arts & Heritage.
  • Hon. Geoffrey K. Kiringa Ruku – Nominated to lead the Ministry of Public Service, Human Capital Development & Special Programmes.

These nominees are expected to bring a wealth of experience, professional acumen, and above all, wisdom gained through diverse life journeys. Their appointments, if approved by Parliament, will mark a new chapter in the leadership of key ministries that directly impact social and human development.

Key Portfolio Reassignments

In addition to the nominations, the President also implemented strategic reassignments among serving Cabinet Secretaries, in accordance with Article 152(5)(a) of the Constitution:

  • Hon. Aden Bare Duale, E.G.H. – Reassigned to the Ministry of Health.
  • Dr. Deborah Mlongo Barasa – Reassigned to the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change & Forestry.

These reassignments reflect a realignment of roles to address evolving national needs, particularly in the sectors of health and environmental conservation, which remain critical to Kenya’s socio-economic stability and development.

Implications for National Development

This cabinet reshuffle signals the President’s resolve to accelerate the implementation of government policies by placing trusted leaders in roles that match their strengths. The addition of new voices in the cabinet, along with the repositioning of seasoned leaders, is expected to reinvigorate the pace of reforms and service delivery.

By entrusting ministries that influence gender equity, health, public service, and environmental sustainability to capable hands, the administration underscores its commitment to inclusive governance and long-term national transformation.

The 2025 cabinet reshuffle is more than a routine political update—it is a strategic effort to reinforce governance structures and respond to the dynamic needs of the nation. As the nominees await parliamentary approval, the focus now shifts to how these leadership changes will shape the trajectory of Kenya’s policy implementation and public service delivery.
