IPOA Statement on Lagat’s Summons
In a press release issued on Wednesday, June 18, IPOA confirmed it had established sufficient grounds to require DIG Lagat’s formal statement.
“Having found basis, IPOA has issued summons to the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Eliud Lagat, to appear before the Authority’s investigations team to record a statement,” the agency announced.
Progress in IPOA’s Investigations
According to IPOA, the probe has advanced significantly, with over 20 police officers already having recorded statements. Among them is Deputy OCS of Nairobi Central Police Station, Inspector Samuel Ng’ang’a.
Two officers, OCS Chief Inspector Samson Talaam and PC James Mukhwana, have already been arraigned in court. Inspector Ng’ang’a was arrested on Tuesday, June 17, and remains detained at Muthaiga Police Station.
Civilians Also Implicated
IPOA further noted it has taken action against several civilians involved in the case. Kelvin Mutisya Mutava, suspected of tampering with CCTV footage at Central Police Station, was arrested alongside three detainees Brian Mwaniki Njue, Collins Karani, and Gin Ammitou who were present during the incident.
Coordination With DPP
IPOA is working in tandem with the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) to fast-track the case.
“We are confident that by early next week, the investigation file with recommendations to charge various suspects will be ready,” the statement concluded.
