Raila Demands Compensation for Gen Z Protest Victims
Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga has told President William Ruto that his recent apology to Kenyan youth is insufficient unless followed by meaningful action.
Speaking at the Madaraka Day celebrations in Homa Bay on Sunday, June 1, Raila emphasized the need for the government to compensate families of those who were killed or injured during the anti–Finance Bill 2024 protests.
“We appreciate an apology as a first step, but it’s not enough. True closure can only come with compensation for victims and their families,” Raila declared.
President Ruto’s Apology to Gen Zs During National Prayer Breakfast
President Ruto made the apology during the National Prayer Breakfast held at Safari Park on May 28. He acknowledged the pain caused by last year’s protests, saying:
“To our children, if there was any misstep, we apologise. We want to build a relationship that will make our country great.”
While some applauded the move, leaders like Raila and other opposition figures have criticized it as being too little, too late.
Justin Muturi: Apology Lacks Sincerity Amid Allegations
Former Attorney General Justin Muturi added to the criticism, claiming that the apology means nothing in the face of serious issues such as abductions and alleged state repression.
Muturi even revealed a personal incident involving the abduction of his child, noting that their release was only secured due to his proximity to power, highlighting a system plagued by impunity.
Call for National Healing and Reconciliation
As Kenya reflects on its democratic journey during the Madaraka Day celebrations, Raila called on leaders to move beyond words and toward healing.
“Let’s close this painful chapter with justice. Only then can Kenya truly move forward in peace and unity,” he concluded.
