Joy Karwitha Kiugu, recently appointed as Meru County’s Executive Committee Member for Lands, Housing, and Urban Development, stunned the crowd when she arrived in a helicopter for her swearing-in ceremony held at Kinoru Stadium.
Her grand entrance attracted mixed reactions, with many questioning the timing and optics of such a showy appearance—especially as her recent past includes a pending legal battle.

CEC Appointment Amid Ongoing Court Case
Karwitha was thrust into the public eye in December 2023 when she was charged with the theft of a KSh 3.2 million Range Rover Evoque belonging to Revere Technologies Limited. The alleged incident occurred at Crescent Business Centre in Nairobi on September 30th.
She pleaded not guilty to the charges, with her defense citing an unresolved High Court matter over the vehicle’s ownership. Despite the ongoing case, the Meru County administration moved forward with her appointment to the Lands docket.

Karwitha’s dramatic entry into political office has ignited debate across Meru and the country at large. While her supporters praise her confidence and charisma, critics argue that the helicopter stunt is a distraction from the ongoing legal matters and questions of credibility.
Her case has become symbolic of a larger national conversation around leadership, integrity, and public accountability in political appointments.
