Kajiado West MP Arrested by EACC
Kajiado West Member of Parliament George Sunkuyia has been arrested by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) for allegedly forging his Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) certificate.
The arrest adds to growing concerns over the integrity of academic qualifications among public servants in Kenya.
859 Public Officers Found With Fake Documents
According to the recently released 2023–2024 National Values Report, a nationwide audit of 168,000 officers across 358 institutions uncovered that 859 individuals were using fake academic certificates, while 160 had falsified professional qualifications.
Even more alarming, over 24,000 government officers had not been certified at all, raising serious accountability and performance concerns.
Calls for Action as Genuine Graduates Struggle
Head of Public Service Felix Koskei condemned the growing trend, stating that it is unjust for genuine graduates to struggle while fraudsters secure high-level positions.
“It is unacceptable that graduates with genuine first-class degrees struggle to find work while fraudsters thrive,” said Koskei.
Few Institutions Reporting Fraud
Despite the scale of the problem, only 49 institutions have reported fraud cases to the EACC or the Public Service Commission, with just 43 submitting evidence for investigations.
This lack of cooperation has hampered enforcement efforts and prompted renewed calls for transparency in recruitment and certification across both public and private sectors.
What Happens Next?
The EACC is expected to take further action against individuals and institutions implicated in the audit findings. As for MP Sunkuyia, legal proceedings are underway as investigators determine the extent of the forgery allegations.
