Arrests Linked to Inconsistencies in Statements
The individuals — Were’s personal driver and bodyguard — were taken into custody on the night of Tuesday, May 6. According to DCI sources, the pair are being treated as persons of interest after allegedly providing conflicting accounts about the events leading up to and following the fatal shooting of the MP along Ngong Road on March 30.
Interestingly, neither the driver nor the bodyguard sustained any injuries during the incident that claimed the MP’s life — a detail investigators say has raised further questions.
Other Suspects, Weapons, and Evidence Recovered
So far, a total of six suspects are in police custody. On Monday, four of them appeared before the JKIA Law Courts, where detectives secured a 30-day custodial order to allow for extended investigations.
In a significant breakthrough, the DCI recovered two pistols during a raid in the Chokaa area of Kayole, Nairobi. One of the firearms is suspected to have been used in the deadly shooting. Both weapons will undergo ballistic analysis to determine their origin and link to the murder.
Detectives also found a bag and shoes believed to have been worn by the primary suspect on the day of the attack.

Autopsy Reveals MP Was Shot Five Times
The Chief Government Pathologist, Dr. Johansen Oduor, confirmed in the post-mortem report that MP Charles Were was shot five times from the left side. The bullets damaged vital organs, including the heart, lungs, liver, and aorta, making survival impossible.
“There was a bullet track on the lungs, heart, liver, and the aorta. This indicates that the injuries were fatal, and survival would have been impossible,” Dr. Oduor stated.
Samples have been collected for further forensic analysis as investigators dig deeper into what appears to be a well-orchestrated political assassination.
What’s Next?
The court is expected to issue directions on bail and bond terms for the suspects on Friday, May 9, as pressure mounts on authorities to uncover the full truth behind the shocking assassination.
