The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) has dismissed claims by former Prime Minister Raila Odinga that he intervened to prevent a military coup against President William Ruto.
In a statement on Monday, March 17, the Ministry of Defence called the claims false, baseless, and misleading. Defence Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya emphasized that KDF remains loyal to the Commander-in-Chief and is committed to upholding national security and constitutional order.

KDF Accuses Media of Spreading False Reports
The allegations were published by Sunday Nation and Taifa Jumapili, quoting an unnamed source who claimed Raila played a role in stopping an alleged coup attempt.
The Ministry criticized the media for reporting unverified claims and warned against misleading narratives that could undermine public trust in national security institutions.
“The Ministry categorically states that the claims in the newspaper articles are false, baseless, and reckless,” the statement read.
Raila’s Alleged Comments on Military Takeover
According to the Nation publication, Raila suggested that the deployment of KDF during the anti-Finance Bill protests in June 2024 could have led to a coup. He claimed he had to step in to prevent an imminent military takeover.
“If the military had taken over, then Ruto would not be in power today. Once soldiers leave the barracks, they never go back,” Raila was quoted as saying.
He further stated that the protests had brought the country close to a turning point where the military could have seized power.
KDF’s Firm Stand
The Ministry of Defence assured Kenyans that KDF remains apolitical and dedicated to protecting the country’s security. It urged the Nation Media Group to uphold ethical journalism by verifying information before publishing.
“The KDF is free from political influence or sectarian interests and is committed to its duty of safeguarding the nation,” the statement added.
