On April 24, 2025, a devastating discovery was made in Kahawa Sukari, Kiambu County. The lifeless body of 24-year-old Precious Mabonga, a female soldier with the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), was found in her bathroom. It was reported that she had taken her own life, using a manila rope to hang herself from the metal bars of the bathroom. This incident has raised concerns about, mental health in the military, and the rise of, suicides among military personnel, in Kenya.

Precious, stationed at Kahawa Barracks, had previously attempted suicide in March 2025 at the barracks. After the earlier attempt, she was treated at the Defence Force Memorial Hospital, where she was diagnosed with, Recurrent Depressive Disorder. At the scene, medical teams discovered antidepressant medication, suggesting the severity of her mental health struggles. Her body has been taken to the Defence Force Memorial Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

The Growing Concern Over Military Suicides

This tragic event highlights a troubling rise in, suicide cases among military personnel. Precious’s death is not an isolated incident—several soldiers have lost their lives to suicide in recent years. Much like police officers, members of the armed forces face immense stress due to the nature of their work, which can have a profound impact on their mental health. The increasing number of suicides in the military is a growing concern that needs urgent attention.

Experts suggest that the pressures of maintaining law and order in dangerous and challenging circumstances often lead to conditions such as, depression and trauma. These mental health issues, combined with the intense demands of their profession, can push soldiers to a breaking point. This trend is not only limited to the military but is a growing concern in many high-stress professions across the globe.

Other Recent Suicide Cases in Kenya

Meanwhile, two other suicide incidents were reported in different parts of Kenya. In Tigania, Meru County, 32-year-old Tartisio Kimathi was found dead in his home in Muili village, having taken his own life by hanging. A suicide note was discovered at the scene. Similarly, in Mogotio, Baringo County, 71-year-old Roseline Kabon Kiptek also died by suicide, found hanging in her home.

These tragic incidents add to the growing concern about the rising number of suicides across the country. Local authorities have taken the bodies for post-mortem examinations, and investigations are ongoing. The growing trend of suicides in Kenya highlights the need for better mental health resources.

The Root Causes of Suicide: Mental Health and Other Factors

The World Health Organization points to a variety of factors that can contribute to suicide, including, financial struggles, joblessness, academic pressures, family problems, and legal issues. Mental health conditions such as, depression and bipolar disorder, along with a history of suicide attempts or substance misuse, also play a significant role in contributing to suicides.

The rise in suicide cases is a global issue, and Kenya is no exception. This alarming trend calls for a deeper focus on, mental health support, particularly for individuals in high-risk occupations like the military and police. As the nation faces these challenges, it is crucial that greater attention be given to the mental well-being of those who serve in these demanding roles.
