Kenya Met Issues Rainfall Alert for Several Regions
The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) has issued a weather advisory warning of heavy rainfall in several parts of the country starting Sunday, March 16.
In an update, KMD stated that Western Kenya, Rift Valley, Central Highlands (including Nairobi), the Lake Victoria Basin, South-Eastern Lowlands, Coast, North-Eastern, and North-Western Kenya will experience significant rainfall.
The department also cautioned that isolated storms and heavy downpours are likely in some areas, potentially marking the start of the long rainy season.
Rainfall Projections:
- March 16-17: South-Western Kenya to receive 30-80mm of rainfall. Central Kenya, including Nairobi, will experience moderate rainfall (10-35mm).
- March 17-18: Rainfall will spread northward, though intensity will slightly drop (5-25mm). Western and Central Kenya will still receive moderate rains.
- March 18-19: Rainfall will intensify again in Central Kenya, Rift Valley, and the Lake Victoria Basin, reaching up to 35mm.
KMD’s 7-day forecast (March 16-23) indicates that some parts of Western, Rift Valley, and South-Eastern Kenya could receive over 100mm of cumulative rainfall. Coastal and North-Eastern regions will also experience scattered showers.
The department urged residents in flood-prone areas to take precautions.
