Kenya Music Festival: Northeastern Regional Competitions
The 98th edition of the Kenya Music Festival regional competitions for the Northeastern region officially kicked off in Wajir County, bringing together learners and educators from Garissa, Mandera, and Wajir counties.
Speaking during the colorful opening ceremony, Deka Mohamud, the Regional Chairperson of the festival and Principal of Raha Girls Secondary School, underscored the role of music and drama in fostering unity, peace, and cultural awareness among young people.
Celebrating Talent and Cultural Exchange
“This festival is more than just a competition it’s a platform for developing talent and nurturing growth among our learners,” said Mohamud. She congratulated all the schools that qualified for the regional stage, emphasizing their hard work and commitment.
She called for fairness and professionalism in the adjudication process, acknowledging the resources schools have invested in preparing for the event.
“We’re proud to host this regional edition here in Wajir. Music is a powerful tool for unity and social transformation, and we are eager to see the best of Northeastern Kenya showcased on this platform,” she added.
Integrity in Adjudication and Discipline in Attendance
Ahmed Abdi, Acting Chairperson of the Primary Schools Music Committee, also spoke during the event, appreciating the efforts of organizers and participants. He assured attendees of transparency and fairness in selecting the winning teams.
“Our adjudicators are professionals of high integrity. We are confident they will recognize the most deserving talents,” Abdi noted, while urging patrons to maintain silence during performances to avoid disrupting the judging process.
Festival a Boost to Regional Arts and Education
The event was attended by the Regional Director of Education, County Directors, Ministry of Education officials, and other dignitaries, marking a major step in promoting the arts, culture, and creative expression in Kenya’s northeastern region.
Participants are expected to align their performances with this year’s festival theme: “Enhancing Creative Economy Through Artistic Expression for Sustainable Development.”
