Kenyans on X are sounding the alarm after disturbing reports emerged of users prompting Grok, X’s AI chatbot, to digitally undress women in photos. The trend has triggered a wave of concern about privacy violations, AI ethics, and the limitations of platform safeguards.
Controversy grows as AI is misused on social media to alter women’s images.

How It Started: A Simple Request Turned Ugly
The incident that caught attention involved a woman who posted her photo on X and asked users to help Photoshop out her sunglasses. While some responded playfully, others took a darker route—using Grok to manipulate the image and attempt to reveal what wasn’t there.
The AI chatbot responded vaguely, warning that misuse is possible. “It’s possible Grok could be misused to create inappropriate images,” it said. While it didn’t directly generate nudity, the chatbot’s willingness to entertain such prompts raised eyebrows.
A Global Pattern of AI Misuse
Kenya isn’t alone. According to Android Kenya, similar behavior has been reported in India, where users have tried to coax Grok into undressing women in photos, replacing clothing with AI-generated bikinis or underwear.
“Grok’s loose guardrails don’t help,” Android Kenya wrote. “While it blocks outright nudity, it still plays along with inappropriate requests.”
Comparisons With Other AI Platforms
Unlike Grok, other AI tools like ChatGPT refuse to modify or generate sensitive image edits altogether. Midjourney, another major generative platform, bans political and controversial content. Grok, on the other hand, has an “Unhinged” mode for premium users that encourages wild and unpredictable responses—fueling the current controversy.
Forbes described Grok’s unfiltered responses as “chaotic and often laced with humor,” but critics say this openness comes at a cost, especially when vulnerable individuals are targeted.
Kenyan Voices Speak Out
Locals have joined the conversation online. One Nairobi-based user wrote, “This AI thing is getting out of hand. What if someone uses Grok to target our sisters or daughters? We need rules and respect.”
Others have called on platforms like X to do more in safeguarding users, especially women, from being exposed to such violations.
Elon Musk Responds
After a user claimed they were able to generate lingerie images by tricking Grok into thinking their life was at risk, Elon Musk responded publicly: “Doing our best to train Grok to be truthful, but also kind and funny.”
Still, critics argue that more concrete action is needed, not just humor and vague reassurances.
What This Means for AI Users and Developers
This incident highlights a growing issue: generative AI tools are powerful but vulnerable to misuse. The responsibility now falls on platforms like X and developers like xAI to set clearer boundaries and enforce stricter safety protocols.
