KNEC to Fine Schools Ksh500 Per CBC Student: Here’s Why

KNEC Sounds the Alarm Over Late CBC Project Submissions

The Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) has issued a strong warning to schools that fail to submit Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) project scores on time. In a circular released on May 12, 2025, KNEC revealed that institutions submitting scores after the deadline would face a penalty of Ksh500 per student.

Which Grades Are Affected?

The warning affects students in Grades 3, 7, and 8—those expected to complete projects as part of their continuous assessment. In addition, Grade 9 learners preparing for the Kenya Junior Secondary Education Assessment (KJSEA) are also expected to complete and submit their project work this year.

Access to Projects and Portal Details

Schools can access the projects and performance tasks through the Competency-Based Assessment (CBA) portal at
https://cba.knec.ac.ke. They are required to administer the tasks, mark them, and upload all learner scores within the given timeframes.

Deadline to Upload CBC Scores

  • Grades 3, 7, and 8: Scores must be uploaded by July 31, 2025.
  • Grade 9 (KJSEA candidates): Scores must be uploaded by August 30, 2025.

KNEC has stated that any uploads made past these deadlines will attract a fine of Ksh500 per student.

Why Timely Uploads Matter

The penalties aim to enforce compliance and maintain the integrity of CBC assessments. Delays in uploading scores compromise the transition process for learners and affect national reporting on academic progress.

Next Steps for Schools

School heads are urged to ensure that all project-based assessments are administered promptly and scores uploaded before the deadlines. KNEC has also reminded institutions to check the CBA portal regularly for updates.
