The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has officially extended the deadline for filing 2024 tax returns by 24 hours, following technical disruptions that affected the iTax portal on Monday, June 30.

Why the Extension?

KRA confirmed that the iTax system experienced high traffic, making it difficult for thousands of taxpayers to access the platform. The new deadline is now set for midnight on Tuesday, July 1, 2025.

“We have opened a service lane! There is a 24-hour extension up to tomorrow, 1st July 2025, midnight to file and pay your returns,” the statement read.

Extended Service Hours

To support taxpayers, KRA has also extended operating hours across its offices and call centres:

  • Contact Centre: 7:00 AM – 8:00 PM
  • Tax Service Offices: 8:00 AM – 8:00 PM

Who Must File Returns?

In a prior notice dated June 13, KRA clarified that all Kenyans with a KRA PIN must file returns, even if they earned no income in 2024. Those with no income are expected to file Nil Returns before the deadline.

How to File KRA Nil Returns on eCitizen

  1. Log into your eCitizen account.
  2. Select the KRA Services tab.
  3. Use your KRA PIN and password to log in (automatic login may occur).
  4. Click File Returns, then choose File Nil Returns.
  5. Select Individual Income Tax and the obligation period (1/1/2024–31/12/2024).
  6. Click Next to complete your submission.

Alternative: File Nil Returns via iTax

  1. Visit the KRA iTax portal.
  2. Log in using your KRA PIN and password.
  3. Go to Return Menu > File Nil Returns.
  4. Select the appropriate tax obligation and period.
  5. Confirm submission and download your receipt.

Don’t Wait Until Midnight

KRA urges all Kenyans to avoid last-minute rushes and file their returns before the final hour to avoid system overloads and penalties.
