KSA Warns of Potential Space Debris Re-Entry Over Kenya

Kenya Space Agency

The Kenya Space Agency (KSA) has issued a public alert regarding the potential re-entry of space debris over Kenya and the broader Eastern African region between April 19 and 20, 2025.

Debris Identified as Norad ID 61909

In a recent statement, KSA identified the space object as Norad ID 61909/2024-205R, which is believed to be a large piece of debris from a rocket body of unknown mass. The object’s projected flight trajectory poses potential interest and concern for Kenya.

Projected Flight Path Over Kenya

The agency explained that the debris is expected to travel along a North-South path, beginning from the North Eastern region of Kenya and extending toward Tanzania, potentially covering a significant portion of Eastern Africa.

Timing of Potential Re-Entry

“The re-entry is predicted to occur on Saturday, April 19, 2025, at approximately 11:15 pm ± 15 hours 46 minutes. This indicates a potential re-entry window from Saturday, April 19 at 7:29 am to Sunday, April 20 at 3:01 pm,” the agency stated.

Public Safety Advisory

Though predictions currently suggest the debris is unlikely to fall within Kenya, KSA has cautioned that due to its large size, the object could still pose a threat to life and property. The public is urged to remain vigilant during the predicted time frame.

Reporting Debris Sightings

KSA has urged citizens to report any sightings or landings of debris to the nearest police station, government administrative office, or military camp to facilitate prompt response and safety measures.
