Investigators Recover Crucial Evidence in High-Stakes Anti-Graft Operation

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has launched an investigation into Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya over the alleged embezzlement of Ksh1.4 billion in county funds. The probe led to a dramatic raid at his Kitale residence early Monday morning, with the agency confirming the recovery of key materials believed to link top county officials to fraudulent transactions.

Focus on Three County Projects

According to EACC, the funds under scrutiny were tied to three major county projects during the 2022/2023 and 2024/2025 financial years:

  • Rehabilitation and modernisation of Kenyatta Stadium (Phase 1A)
  • Construction of Trans Nzoia County Headquarters
  • Construction of Tom Mboya Hospital

Natembeya is accused of influencing tender awards and receiving kickbacks via proxies, alongside senior officials in the Finance, Water, and Procurement departments, and a contractor linked to the scandal.

Raid Turns Chaotic as Residents Clash With Police

As EACC officers conducted the raid, tensions escalated outside Natembeya’s home as his supporters confronted security forces. Police reinforcements were deployed after five agency vehicles were vandalised during the standoff.

EACC Denies Political Motivation Claims

Responding to public outcry and claims by political allies that the raid was politically orchestrated, the EACC issued a firm statement asserting its independence and commitment to the rule of law.

“The Commission strongly condemns the hooliganism directed at its officers while lawfully executing their mandate. It is an offence punishable by law to obstruct EACC officers during investigations.”

Ongoing Investigations and Public Reaction

The raid comes days after Wiper Party Leader Kalonzo Musyoka warned of a planned arrest targeting Governor Natembeya. EACC insists their operations are based solely on evidence and legal frameworks.

Natembeya has recently been vocal in opposing the leasing of Nzoia Sugar Company, a move that has seen him lead protests alongside locals, raising political temperatures in the region.

What’s Next?

The EACC confirmed ongoing investigations into alleged money laundering and acquisition of unexplained wealth by several top officials. More arrests and prosecutions are expected as forensic audits continue.
