Liverpool and Portugal football star Diogo Jota has tragically died at the age of 28 following a car accident in northern Spain. The crash, which occurred late Tuesday night, also claimed the life of his younger brother, André Jota, aged 26.

According to Spanish media reports, Jota’s Lamborghini reportedly suffered a tyre burst while overtaking another vehicle. The car veered off the road, flipped over, and burst into flames near Zamora. Emergency responders confirmed both men were declared dead at the scene.

The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) expressed deep sorrow over Jota’s passing. Federation president Pedro Proença issued a heartfelt statement, describing Jota as “much more than an amazing player” and “an extraordinary person respected by teammates, opponents, and his community.”

“Much more than an amazing player, with almost 50 appearances for the National A Team, Diogo Jota was an extraordinary person, respected by all teammates and opponents, someone with infectious joy and a reference in the community itself,” said Proença.

A Career Cut Short

Jota, who joined Liverpool in 2020 from Wolverhampton Wanderers, was instrumental in the club’s recent successes. He played a key role in helping Liverpool FC win the 2024/25 Premier League title and was also part of Portugal’s squad that triumphed over Spain in the UEFA Nations League final in June 2025.

Jota had recently married his childhood sweetheart, Rute Cardoso, in a private ceremony in Porto just 10 days prior to the accident. The couple, parents to three young children, shared photos of their wedding on social media, celebrating what they described as “a perfect day surrounded by love.”

Global Tributes Pour In

Fans and fellow footballers from around the world have taken to social media to express their grief and pay tribute to the Portuguese forward. Liverpool FC issued a statement mourning the loss of “a beloved member of the Liverpool family whose talent and spirit inspired millions.”

The club added: “Diogo’s contribution on and off the pitch will never be forgotten. Our thoughts are with his wife Rute, their children, and the entire Jota family at this incredibly difficult time.”

A minute of silence is expected to be observed at upcoming football matches across Europe, including Portugal’s women’s European Championship game later this week.

Investigation Underway

Spanish authorities have launched an investigation into the crash. Initial findings suggest a tyre blowout as the likely cause, though a full forensic examination is underway.

This tragic accident has left the football world reeling, mourning the loss of a player who brought joy to fans both in Portugal and around the globe.
