Liverpool have pulled clear of recent rivals Man City to virtually clinch the Premier League title this season despite losing legendary boss Jurgen Klopp last year.
The Reds have pressed on and used that advantage to poach Man City‘s director of football data Laurie Shaw in recent days.
Shaw will become Chief Scientist for Fenway Sports Group (FSG) – but will work specifically with Liverpool after completing gardening leave at the Etihad Stadium.
FSG are looking to expand their reach in football and have reportedly been exploring a takeover deal at Spanish second division side Malaga.
Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – insisted he was “blown away” when he looked at Shaw’s resume and record.
Shaw will be ‘huge asset’ for Liverpool, says Wyness
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness insisted he believes Shaw will be a “huge asset for Liverpool” in the future.
The Scot was a research scientist and lecturer at Harvard University before joining Man City in 2021.
Wyness insisted this move ties into FSG’s plans to establish a multi-club network.
Position | Team | Played | Points | GD |
1 | Liverpool | 32 | 76 | 43 |
2 | Arsenal | 32 | 63 | 30 |
3 | Newcastle | 32 | 59 | 21 |
4 | Nottingham Forest | 32 | 57 | 13 |
5 | Man City | 32 | 55 | 20 |
He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “Fenway are building a really high-quality strategic group for their multi-club network.
“Laurie Shaw, when I looked into his CV, it blew me away.
“He’s got a PhD in computational astrophysics, he’s lectured at Harvard, written plans for hedge funds, advised the government – it’s very impressive.
“It’s a really high-quality, top-level brain. He obviously loves his football, and he will be a huge asset for Liverpool.”
Liverpool could accept Diaz offer
Meanwhile, Football Insider revealed on Monday (14 April) that Liverpool could consider a mega-money offer for winger Luis Diaz this summer as Saudi Pro League interest resurfaces.
Liverpool have held contract talks with Diaz in recent months, with his current Reds deal set to expire in June 2027 – but have not made progress.
It is believed they could accept a bid of £60million-plus in the off-season if Diaz is keen to make a move elsewhere.
