Man City supporters have erupted after news emerged of the club attempting to secure a replacement for Kevin De Bruyne this summer.

De Bruyne announced his decision to depart Man City at the end of the season after 10 brilliant years at the Etihad Stadium, lifting several Premier League trophies and the Champions League title.

With 106 goals and 176 assists in 414 appearances, the Belgian has written his name into the history books, not just with the Citizens, but in the world of football as a whole.

Only Liverpool’s star winger Mohamed Salah has come anywhere close to challenging the creative maestro over the last decade, and now the City owners are tasked with finding a suitable replacement.

Florian Wirtz wanted to replace Man City legend

According to The Athletic’s David Ornstein (8 April), Bayer Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz is one of the options being considered ahead of the summer transfer window.

With 20 goals and 21 assists over the last two seasons in the Bundesliga, the 21-year-old has certainly made a name for himself and would likely be the perfect player for Pep Guardiola.

Guardiola, who appears to be under increasing pressure at Man City, will have a challenge on his hands in terms of a squad overhaul, but signing Wirtz would certainly alleviate some of the pressure from the fans.

However, Wirtz was not the only name mentioned. Nottingham Forest’s Morgan Gibbs-White is appreciated, and the Citizens could attempt to lure him away from The City Ground.

It is safe to say, the news has not gone down so well with the supporters, who have highlighted the sort of stars they have lost in recent years to Chelsea, and Aston Villa via Middlesbrough.

Man City faithful against Morgan Gibbs-White signing this summer

One supporter has quickly dubbed Gibbs-White as the “English” Matheus Nunes, with the Portuguese player very much in the news after Guardiola suggested he is “not smart enough” to play in midfield.

The former Wolves man has settled well into the inverted full-back role, a position which has been mastered by the Citizens, but it is highly unlikely that Gibbs-White would suffer the same fate.

Another supporter pointed out that the club used to have Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers on the cards, with Gibbs-White apparently a downgrade, while another has called out the club for being “washed”.
