A 20-year-old student from Maseno University has been found dead in a suspected suicide incident, adding to a growing list of mental health-related tragedies in Kenya.
According to police in Kisumu, Francis Odhiambo, a first-year student, was discovered in his rented room on April 2, 2025. He had reportedly taken his own life by hanging himself with a sisal rope from the rafters of his ceiling.
A suicide note was recovered at the scene, allegedly citing lack of support from immediate family members as the reason for his decision. Authorities are analyzing the note to confirm its authenticity.
The body was moved to the mortuary for a postmortem examination. Police are continuing their investigations into the matter.

Rising Suicide Cases in Kenya
Police have expressed concern over the increasing number of suicide cases being reported daily—averaging two per day. This worrying trend has sparked calls for more mental health awareness and support systems across the country.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), common triggers for suicide include joblessness, academic pressures, legal and financial difficulties, as well as mental health issues such as depression, bipolar disorder, and substance abuse. A history of suicide in the family and bullying are also known contributing factors.
The rise in such cases highlights the urgent need for stronger mental health support in schools and communities nationwide.
