Family Confirms Death at KNH
The family spokesperson confirmed on the afternoon of Monday, June 30, 2025, that Boniface had succumbed to his injuries. He had been admitted to the ICU after being shot in the head during protests demanding justice for Albert Ojwang.
“Boniface was confirmed dead this afternoon. We had been told on Sunday that he was already brain dead, but we were still hopeful,” said family representative Emily Wanjiru.
Declared Brain Dead
Earlier on Sunday, June 29, the family had revealed that the hawker’s brain had stopped functioning, even though his heart was still beating.
“The reality of things is that Boniface Mwangi Kariuki is declared brain-dead. The hospital bill is now higher than Ksh3 million. We know what this means,” the family announced.
Officers in Custody
Constable Masinde Klinzy Barasa, the officer suspected of shooting Kariuki, remains in police custody. Also being held is Constable Duncan Kiprono, who was with Barasa at the time of the shooting.
Human rights groups have condemned the shooting and called for swift prosecution. The Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC) has pledged legal support to the family as investigations continue.
Growing Calls for Police Accountability
The incident has intensified calls for police reform and accountability, with civil society groups demanding transparent investigations and justice for victims of police brutality.
