Meet Dr. Benard Chitunga, Kenya’s Youngest University Chancellor in History

Dr. Bernard William Chitunga is a highly accomplished professional with extensive experience and expertise in partnerships, development finance, and multilateralism. On April 30, 2025, he will be installed as the second Chancellor of the Co-operative University of Kenya, becoming the youngest Kenyan ever appointed to such a prestigious academic position in the country’s history.Dr. Chitunga’s appointment was formalized through Gazette Notice No. 387, in line with the Universities Act No. 42 of 2012, by President William Ruto.His installation ceremony will take place at the Co-operative University Graduation Square Main Campus in Karen, Nairobi, and will be attended by President Ruto, marking a significant milestone for both the university and the country.Dr. Chitunga takes over the role of Chancellor from the late Hon. Joseph Nyagah, the inaugural Chancellor of the university. He will serve a five-year term in this prestigious role.

Dr. Bernard Chitunga’s Academic and Professional Background

Before his appointment as Chancellor, Dr. Chitunga held a prominent position at the African Development Bank Group (AfDB), based in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, where he worked as a Senior Officer for Partnerships, Donors, and Special Projects. He was involved in high-profile projects, including the USD 5 Billion Affirmative Finance Special and Trust Funds, serving as the Task Manager during their establishment.

Dr. Chitunga is also a fellow of the European University Institute School of Transnational Governance in Italy, further solidifying his international credentials in the fields of global governance and development finance.

Dr. Bernard Chitunga’s Education Background

Dr. Chitunga’s academic credentials include two doctorate degrees: one in Management and the other in Sustainable Development from the University of KwaZulu-Natal (South Africa) and Selinus University (Italy), respectively.

He also holds an MBA from UGSM Monarch Business School in Switzerland and a Master’s in Global Business and Sustainability (Social Entrepreneurship) from Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Italy.

Additionally, Dr. Chitunga earned a Postgraduate Certificate in Development Strategy and Governance from the University of Bradford (UK), which further complements his expertise in governance and development strategy.

This appointment marks a turning point for the Co-operative University of Kenya, with Dr. Chitunga expected to bring fresh ideas and perspectives to the university’s leadership.
