When Nyambura Kimani walked into Kenyatta University over 10 years ago, she was ready to make her mark on the world. However, several years later, she found herself battling the institution over her right to graduate. On May 22, 2025, the High Court of Kenya ruled in her favour.

Victory at the High Court

In a landmark decision, the judge ruled that KU’s actions were illegal and unfair. The court awarded Nyambura Ksh850,000 in damages and ordered the university to include her in its upcoming graduation ceremony. The High Court ruling Kenya was a win for student rights in Kenya and set a new precedent.

Beyond the Courtroom

Beyond the headlines, Nyambura has consistently challenged limits. Named one of Africa’s most influential young women, she has demonstrated excellence in education and advocacy. From founding organizations to influencing education reforms in Kenya, her journey is inspirational.

Career Journey and Innovations

In June 2024, she co-founded Katiba Hub, a micro think tank affiliated with Georgetown University that promotes democracy, transparency, and public accountability in Africa. Katiba Hub has digitised Kenya’s 2010 Constitution and translated it into 35 languages to boost civic awareness and accessibility.

The hub also conducts public debt audits, evaluates county government finances, and runs educational campaigns to enhance constitutional rights in Kenya.

Dream VC Fellowship

In May 2025, Nyambura joined Dream VC as a Launch into VC Fellow. Dream VC is a pan-African initiative focused on venture capital in Africa, supported by a network managing over $7 billion in assets. It nurtures young professionals seeking to impact African markets.

The Jelani Foundation

Nyambura also founded the Jelani Foundation in 2022 in memory of her late father, J.K. Wathanga. The foundation supports STEM education scholarships in Kenya and TVET training for youth in underserved communities.

Academic Excellence

She is currently completing an MA in International Business & Policy at Georgetown University (2023–2024) and has earned professional certifications from Coursera and Asana.

Nyambura noted: “Three months in, I can say I’m on my way to becoming a well-rounded policy maven and making lifelong friends.”

A Fight for Justice

Following the decision, Nyambura shared her experience: “Well, I sued Kenyatta University and won. After years of frustration over a missing elective mark, I decided to go to court.”

Her legal win is a message of hope and empowerment to Kenyan youth and a bold reminder of the importance of pursuing justice and educational rights.
