University Lists Animals and Vehicles for Auction

In a rare and attention-grabbing move, Moi University has announced the public auction of various animals and assets—including German Shepherd dogs, donkeys, pigs, bulls, and even a Toyota Hilux pickup.

According to a notice dated Monday, June 16, the institution listed 4 male and female German Shepherd dogs with a reserve price of Ksh 40,000 each. Additionally, 10 donkeys will go under the hammer at prices ranging from Ksh 6,000 to Ksh 15,000.

More Items on the Auction List

The upcoming sale scheduled for Thursday, June 24 also includes:

  • 10 pigs – Reserve price: Ksh 3,500 to Ksh 7,000
  • 19 bulls and bull calves – Highest reserve at Ksh 70,000
  • 1 Toyota Hilux – Reserve price of Ksh 350,000

Interested bidders can view the items on June 20 and 23 from 4:00 PM at designated university storage points.

Auction Rules and Deposits

Moi University’s auction notice requires bidders to pay a refundable deposit Ksh 20,000 for vehicles and Ksh 2,000 for other items to participate.

“The highest bidder shall be declared the purchaser. If they fail to complete payment, the deposit will be forfeited,” the notice stated.

University’s Financial Crisis Deepens

The auction is part of Moi University’s efforts to address its ongoing financial woes. According to a recent Controller of Budget report, the institution is currently grappling with pending bills totaling Ksh 6.2 billion.

This comes amid broader concerns about university management and sustainability in Kenya’s public institutions. The Education Committee in Parliament recently raised questions about Moi University’s financial decisions and ongoing retrenchments.

As Moi University turns to unconventional revenue streams like animal and vehicle auctions, Kenyans are watching closely to see whether the move will meaningfully contribute to the institution’s financial recovery.
