Mumias East MP Peter Salasya has called on Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna to step down from his position as Secretary General of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), citing growing contradictions within the party’s stance towards the government.
In a strongly worded post shared via X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday, April 13, Salasya accused Sifuna of opposing President William Ruto’s administration while the ODM party appeared to align itself with the same government.
“Edwin Sifuna, my brother from Western, come back home! Step down as ODM SG. You can’t oppose a government your party sleeps with. ODM’s days are fading, and so are yours if you stay,” — Peter Salasya

President Ruto Joins the Fray
The tension between Sifuna and top government officials escalated when President William Ruto, during a funeral in Siaya County, warned Sifuna of possible disciplinary measures within ODM. Ruto reminded the Senator that he himself is a founding member of the opposition party.
“When you speak about me, Edwin Sifuna, know that I am a founding member of ODM. If you push me too far, I will call for a meeting of the founding members, and we can discipline you,” Ruto said.
Controversy over Echoes of War
During the event, Sifuna addressed the Echoes of War play drama involving Butere Girls High School, which was barred from performing at the national drama festivals in Nakuru. He blamed the government for failing to handle the matter properly.
“Like the Bishop mentioned, your job is very hard. However, there are some difficulties you have imposed on yourself. Like what we saw in Nakuru, where students were blocked from performing — that was unnecessary,” said Sifuna.
His sharp remarks and defiant tone have sparked debate within ODM and Kenya’s political space, with critics questioning his continued role as Secretary General in a party whose leadership appears to shift alliances.
