County Takes Action After Public Complaints
Nairobi County has ordered the immediate closure of all Naivas Supermarket branches within the capital, citing violations related to expired products and public health safety concerns. This action comes after growing complaints from customers and civic leaders about food safety practices in the popular retail chain.
Expired Products Found on Shelves
The decision was led by the Nairobi County Assembly Health Committee, chaired by Mountain View MCA Maurice Ochieng. During a spot-check at Naivas Moi Avenue, the committee allegedly found expired items being openly sold to unsuspecting customers.
“We are here at Naivas Moi Avenue and have confirmed that there are expired products on the shelf. This is dangerous and unacceptable,” said Ochieng.
Food Handlers Not Medically Cleared
The committee also highlighted concerns over hygiene standards. According to Ochieng, many food handlers at Naivas outlets had not undergone medical examinations or received clearance to handle food products.
“The staff serving food are not tested or certified. We cannot risk the health of Nairobians. All outlets must close until proper testing and certification is done,” he added.
Retailers Put on Notice
Ochieng warned other supermarkets and food establishments in Nairobi to comply with health and safety standards or face similar consequences. He called on the Chief Health Officer to act swiftly and ensure routine inspections across the city.
“This isn’t a witch hunt. We are prioritizing public safety. Every retailer must be held to account,” he emphasized.
Naivas Yet to Respond
As of Wednesday evening, Naivas Supermarket had not released an official response to the closure directive or the allegations made during the inspection.
The closures are expected to impact thousands of daily shoppers and retail workers as investigations and health compliance checks get underway.
