Drivers using the Nairobi-Nakuru highway have been warned to proceed with caution following early morning blockades during the Gen Z memorial protests on June 25, 2025.

Bonfires and Roadblocks Reported in Limuru and Kimende

The Long Distance Drivers and Conductors Association (LODDA) issued an alert to its members reporting incidents in Limuru, Kimende, Kinungi, and Ihindu.

According to the update, residents had lit bonfires and placed stones across the highway while extorting money from drivers and passengers.

“Limuru, Kimende, Kinungi and Ihindu residents on the busy Nairobi-Nakuru highway have lit bonfires and placed stones on the road, extorting money from drivers. Tukae rada (let’s be careful),” the statement read.

Motorist Association Calls for Police Action

The Motorist Association of Kenya confirmed the reports, stating that traffic had been blocked around Kimende. The group questioned the absence of traffic police in the area and demanded immediate intervention.

“Where is the National Police Service? Who is this disrupting free flow with impunity?” the association asked in an online post.

An X (formerly Twitter) user named Naf confirmed the situation, saying: “We passed there at around 2 am and we paid them.”

Nationwide Traffic Updates

The Motorist Association has since confirmed that traffic is flowing smoothly across other regions of the country despite the isolated incident along the highway.

They urged the Kenya Police to ensure free movement of vehicles and emphasized that protesters have vowed to remain peaceful.

“Let the buses, lorries, cars, cabs, boda and matatus move freely. Peaceful protest is a right, but transport services should not be disrupted,” they added.
